I am having trouble joining wifi networks with my iphone 5.

I have had trouble connecting to common free wifi networks since I purchased my Iphone 5. Even at places like Starbucks where I can connect with my IPad, I still can't connect with my IPhone 5. I frequently get the error message "Unable to Connect to Network" Has anyone else had a similar problem. Better yet, does anyone have a solution?
