Q: Help! - No devices associated with my itunes account.

My son's 1st Gen I-pad 32gb wifi stopped updating apps.  I reset the wifi connection - still didnt work.  I then selected "reset device".  It told me I would not lose data.  Unfortunately it wants to now do a complete "start as new" thing that says it will erase everything.  I for the first time, hooked up the device to my PC.  Itunes started but when it went to sync - it told me I could not sync any apps because PC was not authorized.  I logged into Itunes and "authorized my computer".  Next issue - even though it is an authorized computer, I do not have a "manage devices" section under the my account info.  How do I get my son's Ipad (which uses my apple id) to show up on my computer as a device.  I really feel terrible that I may lose all of his apps and progress in so many of them.  Thanks for any assistance as I am at wits end.  The crazy thing is that I am actually pretty technologically advanced so I am going crazy that I can't figure this out.  Thanks!!!

The iPad will only appear in the 'manage devices' section if iTunes Match has been used on it, automatic downloads are enabled, or previous purchases have been re-downloaded  - when one of those is done and the device or computer is associated with an account then it will be tied to that account for 90 days : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627

If you were prompted to authorise your account on the computer's iTunes when you connected the iPad to it then the iPad must have been recognised by iTunes - does the iPad not appear on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes (if you have iTunes 11 installed on your PC then control-S should get the sidebar to appear) ? If the iPad hasn't been synced to that computer before then has it been synced/back up to another computer or to the cloud ?
