Jul 23, 2013 10:34 PMby nbar,You need Bootcamp 5 and a supported Macbook Air model (2011 and later models) to install Windows 8. You need to be running atleast 10.8.3 to run Bootcamp 5.
You can update to ML via the App Store:

Jul 23, 2013 11:21 PMby nbar,See if you can return your windows 8 CD. Mountain Lion still supports windows 7, but so does Lion. I believe you have 72 hours to refund ML,http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact/ , if you wish to do so.
