Just dropped water on my macbook pro 13" and it wont turn on. Assuming the HDD is still good and i haven't used time machine before, how would i get everything off the old hdd onto a new macbook air. Or preferably how could i time machine the old hdd, so i can restore it fully onto the new air?

Imposible to use Time Machine unless the startup disk on the MacBook Pro is working and your files can be accessed.

As your MacBook Pro doesn't work, you have to take the hard drive out of the MacBook and put it in an enclosure. A basic enclosure will work, like the OWC Express > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/USB2/OWC_Express
You have to use the OWC Express to connect the hard drive to a USB port of the MacBook Air, so it will appear as an external drive. You will be able to access to its data by opening a Finder window and selecting the drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices".
If you want to restore the data of the hard drive onto your MacBook Air, use Migration Assistant > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html It will create a new user account with the transferred files. Note that Migration Assistant may fail
Also, don't try to turn on the MacBook Pro. It's damaged and you may have problems because of water. Take it to an Apple Store or reseller, and if it can be repaired, the repair will be expensive
@carolyn, isnt the startup disc my HDD?? and if it is assuming that its still working
@mende, your saying i can restore a new macbook air fully using migration?
i thought i had to have a time machine backup to do that?
I'm saying that you can restore all the data of the MacBook Pro hard drive onto the MacBook Air. If you haven't set it up yet, it will ask you to restore the data during the setup, being a cleaner way to restore your data.
You don't need to make a Time Machine backup of the hard drive

@mende1, okay hopefully this will work. so on set up of the air have the old hdd plugged into the air via USB?? and it has the option to restore from the external?
@carolyn samit. ye i said i spilt water on it. so i could be the logic board or other things besides the startup disc
Migration Assistant will allow you to restore the data, so you shouldn't have any problem. If it doesn't work, you can restore your files manually using Finder

You don't use TimeMachine at all, instead you remove the drive from the machine and use a SATA to USB adapter cable to the new Mac as they are usually a lot less expensive for temporary use.
A external enclosure if you plan to use the drive as a external drive, however if the drive is old then it's not worth it.
Then use Migration Assistant in your Applications/Utilties folder and transfer files between accounts to consolidate if you wish.
Right brought a caddy got the old hdd in there a boom she works. So im going to go buy a MacBook Air today and ill keep u posted on how this goes, fingers crossed.
