Q: My Macbook pro 13 inch keeps freezing

Over the last two days, I am facing issues with my Macbook pro 13 inch. While running Ableton, it freezes, even though the CPU is not overloaded. Post that, it abruptly crashes to the login screen, and does not respond.

I somehow got it to work and I ran Disk Utility. I verified the disk and it came out ok. I ran "Repair Disk Permissions", and after running for five minutes, it resolved some issues and I got the all ok message.

Here are some lines from the console messages from about the time that I experienced the issue today.

It might be worth upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.4. It is only $20 and is much faster!

From the finder Menu,  > Software Update. Repeat and perform all these updates until there are no more updates. This will bring you up to date (10.7.5).

Or I can install the combine update, right? That would mean the same thing?

Update -> It says the update cannot be installed since it is meant for OS 10.7.4 or later. What to do?

Its not a combo update. Just install the updates in succession.

Will do that. But I hope it does not make the situation worse. People in the forums have been talking about that. I just hope!

Installing your OS X updates will never make the situation worse. You are running 10.7.3, install all the updates until none remain. See if the problem persists.

Updated the OS. The problem is still there. It is ever so slightly patchy. There is that tad delay in response, which wasn't there earlier. Any solutions?

Okay. This thread has gotten very long. What is the problem exactly and what do you mean by "tad delay in the response." Did you rebuild the kernel cache subsequently after updating your software as originally mentioned in my earlier post?

Yup, I did rebuild the kernal cache after updating. "Tad delay in response" means exactly that. There is a delay of some seconds in each task. Even when I open the finder, it takes those little seconds in between to populate the list of my files.

There is no chime sound too at the start-up, if that might mean something. Any help?

Okay, I found the problem, although I am flabbergasted. After installing the updates, I ran repair permissions.

It repaired plenty of permissions, but all of a sudden, it went on a tizzy, showing all these weird errors. I had no other option but to hard boot the system. Next, I booted holding down the cmd and R key.

I clicked on repair the disk, and bam, after 5 minutes, it said it cannot repair the disk. Now, there are a couple of things which surprise me->

    1. When I did this the first time, all came out okay. How come the disk suddenly wen kaput?

    2. What is the root of the problem here? Will doing a clean install solve the problem, or does my HD needs to be replaced? After the repair failed, I booted normally and it booted fine. Although I quickly shut it down since I still have to backup my system.

    Any answers?

The vast majority of the time when the drive cannot be repaired, it needs to be replaced. Some swear that DiskWarrior can 'repair' that which Disk Utility cannot, but I've not found this to be the case. Looking over the thread, I would guess that the problem, all along, has been the disk.

Do you have backups? Because it sounds as if it's time to go disk shopping. I can highly recommend the HGST 7200 rpm drives sold by OWC, Newegg, Amazon, etc.

    Clinton

Oops - sorry - I see now that you have no backups. I would recommend getting a new hard drive and an USB enclosure for your old drive and trying to rescue the data from the old drive
