Q: My Power Mac G5 freezes about 20 seconds after I plug in ethernet cable.

It's a late 2004 Power Mac G5. The modem is a D-Link, works fine with my newer (Intel) MacBook Pro, and multiple other devices. I thought it was a software problem, so I wiped the HDD and re-installed OSX. All works fine until I plug in the ethernet cable. Even that works fine for about 20-30 seconds, then Finder freezes, then everything freezes and I can't do anything except turn it off.

Any ideas?

I think the issue is with the nature of the connection or the router. Is it possible that my router doesn't like PPC macs?

    It is possible, yes.

I don't know if you want to put any more money into it, but these handle Routers better in my experiences...

Thanks - I actually ordered one of them last week. That reminds me, I think I should track that order!

Will let you know how that works out.

This is a mystery.  What router do you have? Modem? ISP?

Could you try another wifi router?  Would a neighbor lot you access there wifi router?

Might be an interaction between wifi router & OS X.  What the router does shouldn't free OS X.

When you re-installed did you modify your Interent settings?  If so, what did you do?  Should not need to mess with Interent setting.  Take defaults.

What the router does shouldn't freeze OS X.

Actually, there was a rash of 10.4 PPC Macs crashing when trying to connect via Wifi to one of Apple's own 802.11b/g/n Routers!

I think the cure was to make a b/g only SSID on it for the PPC Macs.

Isn't this the likely problem here?  I'm surprised you didn't mention it earlier?  Just remembered I guess.

    How do you do that?

Seems like buy another wifi router.  Some are fairly cheap.  Don't know how to tell if one would work.

The tenda's are dirt cheap.  My Tenda Wifi dongle does work. 10.4 no less.  Windows XP too.

Normally Apple Routers come with IPs in the 10.0.x.y range, I assumed since the OP had 19.2.168.x.y it wasn't an Apple Router, but you're previous question did trigger the memory, & posted what I knew, since though I've never heard of another brand doing it for sure, but deemed a possible link... thanks for that post.

And, I don't know/think that Ethernet was involved, just Wifi.

Not having one of those Extreme/Express/or whatever, I never knew how to do it myself, but apparently there was a choice in the Airport Utility to set another SSID.

    Hi,

I'm sure you would have fixed this problem after a year (hopefully haha), but I just wanted to post this for if anyone else experiences this problem!  Two days ago, my MacBook Pro suddenly experienced the same issue - I'd plug in my ethernet cord, and the whole system would freeze after 20 or 30 seconds, the only solution being to press the power off button manually.  I tried multiple cords and different ethernet ports around my flat, and even took my laptop and ethernet cord into the Apple store (they both worked perfectly there, of course).  I even called Apple Support, and although I had a lovely operator, he couldn't find a solution for me either.

Just by chance, I tried going to system preferences --> network --> ethernet --> advanced --> ethernet --> configure: manually and suddenly the whole problem went away instantly.

Just thought I'd post this here if it would be of use to anyone else!

Was there ever a solution found to this problem? The same EXACT thing happened to me two weeks ago. Tried everything that I could think of. New modem, new router, new ethernet cable, but the only thing that has worked so far has been to not use the ethernet cord. It seems to only happen at home. Didn't freeze at the Apple Store with wi-fi or ethernet. They even gave me the same ethernet cord they used and as soon as I got home and tried using it--- same result. Freezing after about a minute with a slow build up to it. Same as OP mentioned. You can select menu options (tho nothing happens..), open windows, etc, but eventually it completely freezes and the only way to re-set my 2009 MBP is to hard restart it.

I'd be sure to check for a ground loop in your AC wiring & equipment.

    BDAqua,

The #$@¡* webmasters at Apple have made just about every link we had in our arsenal obsolete by moving just about everything around.

The new link for the 10.5.8 Combo update you mention is:

Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update

I am so sick and tired of going to the main Apple site following links in very important threads here in this forum and just being redirected to the general support portal.  I hope whoever is responsible for this has explosive diarrhea for the next 30 months!

Yeah, not only that, the latest Jive SW foe ASC makes it nearly impossible to get around, I'm down to about 5% the help I was, & sinking lower every week.

The Adobe forums in general, also "powered" by Jive, are suffering the same fate.

In the Photoshop forum, now merged as a platform-agnostic forum, practically all the regulars have left.  Very few Mac users there, and the 'dozers there are mostly clueless beginners or mentally challenged individuals posting the silliest rank-beginner's questions,

I guess elephantine corporations call on Jive when they want to gradually kill their user forums quietly.

Not sure if I understand this. If there was a fault in my house's ground wiring or the electrical outlet wouldn't it also do something to the modem and router that are plugged into the same surge protector? Standard three prong grounded outlet with two connections with surge protector plugged into both and the phone, router and modem and laptop plugged in... Have had no problems until ethernet cord is plugged in. Figuring that it has to be the ethernet port itself, but not sure what caused that damage.

But of course, I'm not sure if it is or something else. That's why this post stood out. EXACT same symptoms.
