How secure is Apple Remote Desktop?

How secure is it to use Apple Remote Desktop to log into a Mac remotely? What is the likelihood of someone getting into the remote Mac by having to lower permissions on the Mac, or whatever needs to be done to make this work?

Thanks.

There are no lowered permissions as such. ARD uses the same user authentication method as the account directly on the computer users. Of course any time you open up a computer to outside access the chance of break-in increases, but unless someone learns that account login information, it's highly unlikely that they'll be able to break into the computer via ARD.

So I currently have the Firewall set to the highest level, and Stealth option set up on a Mac.

1. Are you saying that I will not have to lower these settings at all to use ARD?

2. Are you saying that the real potential way someone could get in would be just hacking my Mac's login password, the same way they could hack it if they sat down in front of my Mac and tried to login to it?

Thanks!

I would like to ask if you really need ARD, or just basic Screen Sharing?

Apple Remote Desktop is for managing a classroom full of Macs, or a department of Macs.

If you are just going to be connecting to your Mac back at home, then you do not need the paid ARD product.

The Screen Sharing app does a secure authentication. You can then change the Screen Sharing applications preferences to encrypt ALL data.

You can use the iCloud Back-To-My-Mac service to remotely connect back to your home (or office) system.

An alternative would be TeamViewer.com that also uses encrypted connections, and does a very good job of getting through home routers.
