I am having the same problem. Mine doesn't switch back and forth though. When I log in I have names for a few minutes then it switches to numbers. It never switches back. I think it might be other accounts too like AIM but I'm not sure since I can only see numbers and don't know who is who. I have been searching online for a fix but I can't find anything helpful. I have quit and restarted iChat several times, I have restarted my computer and I have made sure my software is up to date. I'm still having problems.

I'm having a hard time telling if it is just Facbeook or not. My entire buddy list is numbers. But, it is possible none of my non Facebook friends are logged in right now. In my messages window mostly names are showing from past chats. People I chatted with today have numbers. Some people who are Facebook have pictures showing but others don't. And, non Facebook people have pictures. This started for me last night also. I'm surprised there are not more people with the same problem. Maybe someone will show up who can help us.

HI,

I have not heard of this switching back a forth before.

However a Safe Boot normally corrects the issue.

Start up using this Method then restart the computer again.

Ralph, This problem started last night. F/B chat on messege app keeps switching from the names of people on line to numbers. the numbers are not phone numbers then switches back to names a few mintutes later & then go to numbers again. A lot of people are now having this same exact problem. I did what you said. Started my mac in safe mode but it did not solve the problem like you thought it would.

Hi,

Yes I caught another thread where several other people seemed to have the same issue.

It would appear that this bit is down to the FaceBook servers.

Is there any info on the Status of the FaceBook Chat server ?

lol, Rlalph,

Facebook does not tell us anything. Yea I really believe it is a F/B issue but after 24 hours you would think it would be resolved by now. Ralph, I know you are a genius as I always see you on the boards helping us so please try to figure this out. I guess what we want to know is if F/B is aware of this & if they are working to resolve the issue

HI,

I don't have a Facebook Account which makes it difficult to find out anything from their site.

Even to find the the "instructions" to use Facebook Chat IDs in iChat you have to be logged in !!!

Searching for "Facebook Chat Server Status" got me the following:-

http://developers.facebook.com/docs/chat/

Leads to Facebook's Hlep Center at this page

Nothing about the Status of their server at all.

There also seems to be an item at Facebook called Server Status that seems to look at Users Servers.

The messages listed on the page for it are out of date - some do seem to refer to the Chat server though.

There seems to be a video (which for me is too small to read anything useful) here at YouTube

The piece is not that long but the blurb underneath may have had a link.

I am having the same problem, I have facebook, google talk and yahoo set up in Messages. My google contacts seem fine but a few minutes after being logged messages plays the alert noise normally set for when contacts come online and the names and pictures of my online facebook contacts disapear to be replaced by the blank silhouette and what I am assuming is some kind of facebook identification number. Oddly though the name of one of my contacts remains. Sometimes the same alert sounds and they come back sometimes not. This odd behavior coupled with the fact that another totally different account appears to be working normally leads me to believe that it is an issue with facebook.

We could be waiting a while.
