Q: Messages - Facebook ID numbers instead of Names

Strangely I can visit the developers page and read about the issue but I can't visit the link in the follow up post as I then have to log in.

The Pidgin site gives more info about the process.

If you register at AIM you can register the Screen Names and if you want you can choose a "Display Name" as well.

Both the Screen Names and the Display name are overridden if you have an Address Card in your Address Book/Contacts app for the person with their Screen Name Listed on it.

It would seem that various Jabber Apps can also make use of vCards for you to Name you Buddies and also can make use of Nicknames.

The Enable option at Facebook says the ID someone uses is added to @chat.facebook.com which should then be the Jabber ID (JID).

However that blurb on the Pidgin link shows extra info is returned on a query. (some numeric info and what looks like the "Real Name" (?Display Name) of the Facebook Account)

I am not aware of other Jabber servers doing this.

I felt like that yesterday, I don't think I saw numbers at all.  Today I am back to alternating between numbers and names.

Stayed on names for about 45 minutes but then reverted back to numbers. Also for over a week I am getting a pop up that says my chat password is wrong. when i enter it it does not accept it & then I get a 6 number code on my phone to enter &nthat works but a little bit later I get the same pop up &n have to go through the same process again. I have code generator enabled but why do I still get the pop up and need to go through the process again

It certainly seems to be displaying names a lot more frequently or for a longer duration of time than the numbers.  I am also able to talk to someone on FB through messages now that I couldn't before.  I could send to that person but not receive from.  Everyone else I chatted with on FB through Messages did not have that problem, whatever was preventing me from using Messages with that person seems to be resolved too.

For the last two days now I cannot even connect to facebook from within Messages.  I have not changed a thing so they broke it...  I bet there is a fix within the next OS X.

When I open messages now I get this error:  "Could not connect to host chat.facebook.com"

All other chat apps work, but they fail with the numbers instead of names thing...  Something is seriously up with Messages.  Can anyone else connect?

For the past few days I have to keep entering my FB password to bring up my FB contacts. I use the extra verification of having to enter a numeric code sent to my iPhone whenever FB thinks I am logging in from a new device or browser. And FB thinks I am using a new browser several times a day with Messages. I've even had it happen while in mid-chat with someone. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it because of using the extra verification? Someone kept trying to hack into my FB account a while back, even with frequent password changes, and that extra verification stopped them, so I don't want to give that up.

Anyway, my experience may be related to your not being able to connect.

I am baffeled since other chat clients work, yet they still fail with the names instead of numbers....  I do see several "addressbooksourcesync" errors in my console...  Facebook and Apple are not in sync anymore like they used to be.

Word for word I have experienced exactly what you posted. My F/B account kept getting hacked & did the security code thing also & it stopped it. A few weeks ago when we started seeing numbers appear I would start getting a box to enter my password. it would not accept it and then would get code sent to phone. Seems like evertime I would restart my computer I would have to go through this. It got to be such a pain that yesterday I turned off that feature.Now a lot of times I get a email that says some one logged into your account if it was you disregard so I just delete the email. I am hopping all this is solved when the new operating system comes out but I doubt it. I would really like to enable the security code feature again as it really worked when everything was working right but for now I will keep it off

Please keep me posted if removing the text message code works. I hope that isn't it. Thanks!
