Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread, which can also result in you applying the wrong advice to your particular problem.

In order for us to give your problem our proper attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X. A full list of all the support forums is here:

What OSX version are you using?

Not certain how to fix it, but for theban account...

h2. Manual approaches

The above approaches should be most of what you need to clear and reset problems in Safari; however, if not then you can take more surgical approaches to clearing out Safari’s configuration data and getting the browser up and running again. Keep in mind that this approach will fully reset Safari and clear out your history, local bookmarks, and other settings, so be sure you make a backup of your system before doing this. Then quit Safari, and perform the following steps:

*Remove Safari’s configuration folder:*

1. Open the Go menu in the OS X Finder

2. Hold the Option key and choose the Library option that appears

3. Move the “Safari” folder in here to your desktop

*Remove Safari’s window state:*

1. Open the Library > Saved Application State folder

2. Locate the “com.apple.Safari.savedState” folder

3. Move this folder to the trash

*Remove Safari’s application caches:*

1. Open the Library > Caches folder

2. Locate all folders that begin with “com.apple.Safari”

3. Move these folders to the trash.

*Remove Safari Cookies configurations:*

1. Open the Library > Cookies folder

2. Remove the file called “com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.binarycookies”

*Remove Safari’s preferences:*

1. Open the Library > Preferences folder

2. Remove any file that begins with “com.apple.Safari”

*Remove user plug-ins:*

1. Go to the Library > Internet Plug-Ins folder

2. Move all items from this folder to your Desktop (or elsewhere)

*Remove global plug-ins:*

1. Go to the Macintosh HD > Library > Internet plug-ins folder

2. Move all items out of this folder except the following plug-ins:

Default Browser.plugin iPhotoPhotocast.plugin Quartz Composer.webplugin QuickTime Plugin.plugin

These ones may also be removed for testing your situation, but should be replaced. In addition, if removing plugins does not show any difference in your browser’s behavior, then replace them. However, you can also replace them by downloading the latest versions from their developers’ Web sites.

Ngillin,

were you able to restore your Safari?

I’m having the same problem after an update and reload.

Safari button is dead and does nothing.

I’ve tried to remove the traces of Safari on the Library, as per many indications on the net, but nothing helped.

I’m in search of a solution before I try to reinstall the OS

Thanks for any help.

If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:

1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:

history.plist

lastsession.plist

(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)

and also go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete the file com.apple.Safari.plist

2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.

(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)

3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.

(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)

4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:

Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.

Also look in Library/Input Managers where other third party add-ons may lurk. If you find a SIMBL folder, please note that some SIMBLE.bundles may require updating or possibly removal. More information on third party add-ons here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3230?viewlocale=en_US

Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.

Note also that Safari does not accept any third party tool bars not supplied as part of authorised extension. If you have installed any of these, delete them, or post back for instructions on how to do so.

You need the install disks.

If you are in the US call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).

The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.

If you are in another country:

When you have them, you should perform an archive and install:
