The instruction on http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11331 does seem right. I cannot find the "Edit" button on step 6 folling the instruction. Anyone has a screen shot to demonstrate? And what is the steps to actually login as root? Can I do su - root in the terminal window?

It's not a button but a menu. The syntax, Item > item > item generally refers to menus.
What is it you need to do that requires the "root user?"
There is no whatsoever called "Edit" on that screen. There is a button "Direcroty Editor" and also a button wiht a pen image on it. Neither leads to "Enable root user".
Anyway I was able to use sudo command to execute my command. The instruction is just very poor. No wonder only 50% user find it helpful.
There is an "Edit" on every screen, unless you've managed to hide the menu bar.
Edit is a standard Menu. Almost every application has one.
