If you're sharing an Apple ID, you should use Find my iPhone instead of Find my Friends.
However, sharing an Apple ID is not recommended. Doing so will result in your data appear on your child's phone, and vice versa. Get him a separate Apple ID at http://appleid.apple.com, and send an invite to that ID on Find my Friends.

Jul 24, 2013 5:05 PM in response to bottenby Eric Ross,You would need to make an Apple ID for your child iPhone. Or you can just add the iPhone under your account and use find my iPhone. Take a look at this link, http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2580
