Copy/Paste Audio Configuration Gone Again :-/

This was also dropped in an earlier version but brought back after a lot of people complained.

Let me explain why this important and why I cannot use LPX without it.

If I am mixing an album, working from a template and mix the first song,

I copy the audio configuration from that song (in the mixer window>options>copy audio confiduration)

Then open the next song and paste the audio configuration to it.

Now song 2 has EXACTLY the same mix as song 1.

Import through the browser does not do anything like the same thing.

In fact it's a bit of a shambles and doesn't copy the mix at all (volume levels and sends etc)

It just copies plugin settings and I/O assignments

Imagine you are mixing on a console from tape and mix the first song.

You would then use that mix as the starting point for the next song.

You would not zero the desk and reset all fx processors and start from scratch.

If you are working with rock bands where its more or less the same instruments in each song,

This now missing feature is essential to workflow.

Please comment on this thread if this is an important issue for you

Do you mean mix song 1, then delete all audio, then save as "mix template", then flatten all flex edits in song 2, copy/ paste tempo map and markers, import all audio files to the correct tracks?

Hardly as quick as copy/paste audio configuration.

I also use this feature at every stage of the recording process.

Suppose we track the drums for all songs, I then set up a drum mix for tracking bass and setup plugins and I/O etc for tracking bass. Once this is done for song 1, this is copied to each song before we start tracking.

Same process for guitars, keys, vocals etc.

Copy pasting into template projects is not feasable for this.

Apple should be able to easily give us this feature back.

The ProjectData file inside the Logic project package contains this data (and lots of other stuff).

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply.

Ah.. Okay.. got what you are trying to do i think...

What about clicking in the Settings Button at the top of the Mixer strip and choosing Copy Channel Strip Setting... Then open new project, create new track and press setting button again and choose paste Channel Strip Setting......

That seems to work here...

Its pretty quick to keep old and new projects open at the same time and do this for every track...

Thanks for replying again.

This would take a LONG time for a project with 50-60 tracks and 20-30 busses.

Copy/paste audio configuration is 1 click in song A then 1 click in song B to copy the EXACT mix between projects.

I have been using Logic since V4 and am an Apple Certified Trainer so I know all the alternatives available.

None of them can replace this function that I heavily rely on when mixing.

I run a commercial studio and track/ mix albums every week and really need this function to come back.

I really don't want to be stuck on version 9 as the software moves forward.

I just did 40 tracks from a project and using the Opt+CMD + C or V combination, it took me roughly 60 secs to copy all 40 Channel Strip Settings from one project to another.. so i don't consider that to be a LONG time... though time is relative of course... 🙂 and I was simply trying to offer possible workrounds that you (or anyone else reading this thread in the future) may not have been aware of... (Not knowing your personal skill level in Logic!)

However, I do get it is nowhere near as convenient as the L9 feature which i wish was available in LPX too.. and hopefully it is but another oversight similar to the "next Midi track" issue and that functionality will be restored in the next update or two...

Btw.. have you tried the new LPX version of the Browser Selective Track Import. I ask because you mentioned it doesn't do what you wanted.. and maybe you were used to the L9 version.. but in LPX you now have Sends, I/O and Automation settings you can select and import... along with the Content and Plugin settings you had with L9's version...

Again it's not as convenient as the Copy Audio Config but it is more flexible and you can copy all I/O, Mixer and Sends settings with basically 7 clicks or less..

1) Go to browser

2) Select project

3) Select all tracks in browser

4) Click on top row I/O (to select all I/O)

5) Click on top row Sends (to select all sends)

6) Click on top row Plugins (To select all plugins)

7) Click on Import

Note: I didn't notice the new functionality (I/O. Sends and Automation columns) in the Browser until a few moments ago as i work my way through all the new features of LPX.... so maybe you missed it too?

I totally agree that copy/paste audio configuration is a required function, and having Apple drop it again makes me want to scream "Doesn't anybody working on developing this stuff actually work in the real world?" If you're tracking a band, as Mickrich said, and you get a dozen basic tracks for songs recorded, and then need to run rough mixes, it makes sense that you are going to get a decent sounding mix of the first song going, and then want to duplicate that for the other songs as starting points. Once subsequent tracking is done on the songs they will likely start to diverge and copying the entire mix will become less relevant and useful. Templates are great, but they are most most useful to start a song, and it's difficult to mix a song before the tracks exist. Tracking all the songs, then mixing one, creating a template, then copying all the audio from all the rest back into a blank template seems nuts too to me. Copying every channel strip is certainly doable, but tedious and time consuming. It just seems ludicrous to eliminate this function.

So yeah - here's another vote for restoring this capability ASAP. Thanks to all for sharing the ideas and expertise.

Note: The reason no one has noticed the 'new' functionality in the Track Browser is because.....

It isn't new!

My apologies... In actuality, that functionality (The ability to select Sends.. I/O and Automation) was present in Logic Pro 9 and unfortunately due to the way i sent my Screensets up.. I never saw it there as it was scrolled off my screen!

However, in particular the Sends feature.. now actually works as it should do and didn't always I gather.. compared to the version in LP9.. but still, a bit of a dumb mistake for me to make, so again, sorry!

Thanks to David Nahmani over at LogicProHelp for pointing this fact out to me and also for providing me with yet another "Stupid Pill" for me to swallow... Much appreciated mate!!
