iTunes crashes on startup in Mountain Lion?

iTunes will not open without crashing.

I recently "upgraded" to OS 10.8.4 in order to add facetime and improve icloud capabilities to my late 2008 iMac (3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

I have already tried discarding my playlist and reinstalling the operating system - no luck. Any suggestions?

What do you mean by crashing...

What happens if you open it directly from /Applications?

The app starts to open up, but, while accessing Genius results, an error script appears and bootup stops. Launching directly from Applications did not change anything.

Quit iTunes. Drag ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.itunes* files to the desktop and test. If this doesn't help, quit iTunes and return the files.
