Will not read SD card

My Macbook Pro will not read my SD card. However my multi card reader reads it just fine. The card is a 16gb Transcend class 10 card. I have tried several "solutions" without sucess. Do I file a warranty claim with Apple? Is this a part change out or the whole motherboard?

If it's just one card that can't be read, it may be the card itself that's having problems with your SD slot. I've found that the SD card reader built-into the MacBook Pro is 'iffy'... sometimes I have to wiggle the card around, insert and pull out and insert again, etc., to get some cards to mount.

Is this a fault? Maybe... but I would try different cards first. If multiple cards won't work, THEN I would take the machine to your local Apple Store or AASP and have them diagnose the SD slot (repairing would require a new logic board).

Good luck,

Clinton

UPDATE

Per Apple Support try the following:

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.

4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.

5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second tim
6. Release the keys.

2.

1. Shut down the computer.

2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note
: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC

3.

Reload OSX.

Perhaps one of these will help someone. They did not help me. I am off for the the Genius Bar this Saturday per supports suggestion. A 120 mile round trip. I'll Update later.

UPDATE 2

Genius bar diagnosed a Logic Board (MotherBoard) replacement was in order. The actual tech who did the replacement work made things worse, (He was gifted in this). Ended up shipping my MBP for Depot Service. The Depot was good and fast. (Shipped Monday, Back in my hands Thursday). Paper work indicated they replaced the Logic Board again. All was under warranty. Genius Bar had $650 for the 'repair' while the Depot had $310. So Apple has $960 in this simple repair. Always get the AppleCare warranty when buying Apple products.

I followed your Command-Option-P-R instructions (was that SMC reset?), the problem persisted, then I followed doing (left side) Shift-Control-Option and voila! My in-built card reader works again! As a photography student, I'm ever so grateful. Just thought I'd reply in support of this solution and because perhaps performing both these actions was relevant. Thanks so much!

Hmmm... It just happens that I have exactly the same SD card (Transcend SDHC 16GB 600x) and it does not work with my MacBook Pro reader, although it works with my other laptop.

I don't have any other SD card at the moment but will try some soon... may be it is this particular SD card which does not work with MacBooks... it would be strange, but on the other hand... eehh... nevermind...

I think many of these problems are being caused either by dirty SD cards or dirty readers. I was having this problem until I wiped off the contacts on the SD card and then took an eyeglass cleaning fabric, put it at the end of a pair of tiny needle nose pliers and stuck it in the SD card slot and swished it around a bit. Now it reads cards with no problem.

*Obvious Disclaimer: Be careful when sticking sharp things into your computer, if you break it it's not my fault 🙂
