unexpected error when trying to set up my base station

Yesterday, I hit check for update on my base station in the airport utility (6.3.1) and lost my wifi. I performed a factory reset on the base station (airport extreme) and now it shows the internet as a yellow dot (although I know it is working) and lists my base station under "other wireless devices". When I click on it, it goes into thinking/set-up mode (during which wifi works!) then gives me an unexpected error message. As long as I leave the error message up, I can use wifi. When I clear it, the wifi is gone.

Frustrating. Any help appreciated.
