Ipad connecting to printer instead of router

My Ipad should connect to my router for normal internet use, but it tends sometimes to connect to my wireless printer instead. This is annoying as I much to often need to go to the settings dialogue and change the connection. Can I instruct my Ipad to at all times try to connect to the router? I would like to connect manually to my wireless printer just when I need to print. Ironically, the router is placed in a much better spot than the printer. I also note that the printer is listed on top of the router in "settings".
