App(s) for playing VCD .dat files?

I recently switched from a PC to a Mac. I live in Asia and own a lot of VCDs; I'd like to be able to watch them on my new Macbook, but I haven't had much success yet. I've tried to do my own research, looking for the best apps and so forth. I have tried downloading VLC Media Player, but it doesn't work and I haven't found anything in my research to help me fix it. I also tried Mplayer, but it doesn't support the files I want to watch (.dat), and neither does Quicktime Player.

Can anyone recommend any downloadable apps I can use to watch my VCDs? I'd like something free, and that is well known (meaning, I don't want to download anything that might cause problems with my computer or isn't safe). I have a Mac OS X 10.8.4. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!
