MBPr Temperature & SMCFanControl

Hi,
I just got a Macbook Pro Retina 15". Everything seems working better like any other laptop but with 1 problem.

The temperature is going very high and in the top of the keyboard and on back of the laptop you can't even catch it.
I tried to find a solution on google and the only thing I found is the SMCFanControl.
On his first run it was showing 60C and after I added the Fan Rpm to 5000 it went to 50-53.
I was thinking maybe it is cause of the summer here in Greece having 35C.

I have 3 questions :

  1. What's the normal temperature a MBPr 15" should have?
  2. Does a high temperature (as I said in the top of the keyboard) make any damage to the MacBook?
  3. Is SMCFanControl safe to add the fans on 3500rpm for summer?

I would like to have a sure answer for all these questions of someone who knows all about this.

Thanks,
Kitos14

1. In my opinion, the temperature shouldn't be higher than 80ºC. Any temperature lower than 80ºC would be normal.

2. High temperatures cause damages to the MacBook, starting from GPU or flash storage failures to fan problems.

3. Any fan speed higher than 2000 rpm for a long time is dangerous for your Mac because fans might stop working. Let your Mac set the fan speed as it wants, unless you see that temperature is very high

Hi mende1,

Thanks for your fast repy,
I want to ask you, do you have a MacBook Pro?

1. So the 60C should be OK.

2. Having 60C can't cause any of these problems. Right?

3. OK. I just put the fan speed to the lowest on SMCFanControl which is 2150rpm. Propably I am gonna close the SMCFanControl and use it only if it goes too hot.

I haven't got a MacBook Pro as you can see in my profile, but I have experience with this MacBook.

1. Correct.

2. 60ºC is a normal temperature that any Mac or PC can get and that doesn't cause any problem.

3. I recommend you to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 This will reset the fan speed to factory settings. If your Mac is very hot, set a higher fan speed temporarily
