why do i get a orange spot when shooting the sun?
It usually positioned under the actual sun in the framed photo.

Can you post a screenshot of the effect? It could be lens flare. What type of camera and lens is it?

If the image is in iPhoto take a screenshot of it and post the screenshot. Or export the file out of iPhoto at 640 max pixel dimension and post it.
A hood can help with lens flare. You need to be careful that it doesn't vignette the image at the lower magnification, i.e. 70 mm.

A lens hood won't help if you are shooting the sun.
You're right. I was thinking along the lines the sun coming in at an angle but not actually in the frame.
It sounds like sun flare but I've never seen it as an orange spot (maybe unless the sun was orange due to atmospheric conditions).
Would like to see a screenshot of it.
Basically it is because you are shooting the sun overpowering the sensor
Check TD's suggestions for photographic assistance - this does not involve iPhoto in any way - and my guess is unlikely to be solveable without a major investment in equipment - my solution is to not shoot into the sun

Looks like lens flare alright. Does the spot change postion if the sun's location is in a different part of the frame?
Yes. The spot changes position.
That's good. I was thinking of a small chip/scratch in the lens which would not move. Had one once and when the light hit it right I'd get a flare.
