Did yo do this:

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings

For how to restore:

iTunes: Restoring iOS software

To restore from backup see:

iOS: How to back up

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

You can redownload iTunes purchases by:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

If you did what happened?

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.

- Next try the manual install method of:

iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.

- Then try on another computer

This is frustrating. I bought my twelve year old this thing for Xmas -- we have been locked out of it for over a year now because he let a friend use it while dressing out for Gym and the friend thought it would be hilarious to change his passcode.

We have been laughing so hard-- NOT.

Three hundred dollars for this thing and I cant even get into it.

We waited for my oldest son to come home from the Military because the stupid IPOD told us it needed to be reconnected to the last computer it was connected too. Well, my oldest had the computer and since he was in the military, wasn't much we could do until he could get leave and come home. When he finally did come home, IPOD kept doing what it was doing to everyone above-- saying it needed to update in order to restore and I have tried to update that silly thing a thousand times and guess what -- it keeps failing at the last bit.

I am truly sorry to sound frustrated but I am about ready to throw the thing at a wall and never buy another Apple Product again. I appreciate the security but when so many people cant fix what keeps easily locking them out -- well that security feature now becomes a problem. A HUGE problem.

And I am clicking all of the links above and going through all of these steps and its still not working. This is enough to drive a poor mom insane.
