DNS server not on IPv6?

On my mac OS X Mt. Lion server, I setup DNS server.

I found that, when I connect the server via IPv6, the server could not be connected.

$nslookup

>server the_server_in_IPvt6

>hostname

> ;; time out

Is it true?

no way?

because, my Windows 8 need always IPv6 DNS server address and it tries Ipv6 server first.

I must set one server for IPv6 at least. (ja, I know netsh to change the priority of IPv4 and IPv6).

worse, my Time Capsule'd DHCP advertises its DNS both in IPv4 and IPv6, but TC's DNS servers are got by TC's DHCP, so that the outer (WAN) DNS recordes. I need my local DNS records on my Mac OS X server.

Server.app with Mountain Lion (latest versions of each) does definately support IPv6 DNS records. As a (very) brief summary an IPv4 machine record in DNS is an 'A' record, in IPv6 it is an 'AAAA' record.

When you enter an IPv6 address against a machine name in the Server.app DNS server settings, it automatically spots this and defines it as an AAAA record instead of an A record. A client machine then does a normal DNS lookup of the hostname to the Mac DNS server (which is running BIND) and will get back the A or AAAA record.

The following may help.

ahhh, sorry, I'm Japanese, don't speak English well.

that not what I mean.

I understood M.t Lion Server DNS can correctly treat AAAA records.

In fact, I set them.

What I mean is:

when I access the machine which running the DNS server via IPv6, the server seems not to response.

uhmm,,,,,

as I wrote, I try to identify my trouble (trouble is other, but this relate the trouble), I used nslookup.

I specified my nslookup that "talk to this server" with IPv6 address of my server.

then, host name resolution for any name always fails with "time out".

So this question I made.

CAN Mt. Lion DNS server speak IPv6?

(ja, I know my "Mac" speaks IPv6 well. I can ping6 to my server.)

the total goal: my Windows 8 wants IPv6 address-ed DNS server. so I want to give 8 this server.

contrally, Time Capsule's proxy DNS can responde via IPv6 access. so my Windows 8 resolves "out of my home" addresses its queries using IPv6 DNS server address.

can I make all of you understand, especially my network configuration requirement (no, that's Windows 8 nature).

best regards

great! thank you!

This solves my problem.

now my OS X server (Mavericks) DNS server responds to IPv6 connections. So my Windows 8.1 can get the nslookup answers.

my remaining concern is: I can't stop TimeCapsule (or Airport Extreme BS) DHCP server to replace it with OS X server's DHCP server or I can't set TimeCapsule to advertise OS X server's address as DNS server in DHCP response... I'll make a request to Apple.
