Can I change the 1/8" jack from an output to an input on my iPhone 4S?

I know I can do it on my MacBook, I just can't figure out if I can on my iPhone or iPod. I have the 4S and iPod 5th Gen at my disposal. Is it possible to do this? I want to use it for livestreaming. I want to run audio from a separate device into my iPhone to stream to the web. The streaming app doesn't reconize any microphone input, it only lists the mic options the device is giving it. So I need to make my iPhone recognize the audio input as a source that it can give to the app. Again, is this possible?

You would have to get a wiring diagram, but the iPhone does accept Mic input from the inline mic/earbuds... so in theory, you could get a jack from radioshack/electronics store that has the pinout needed for that.

Note, it will be mono line in, not stereo.
