Apple IMac - 3 Beeps, pause, 3 beeps, memory issues

Hello,

A few issues have arises with my apple Imac.

The first thing I noticed was the fan was going absolutley full blast all the time. It made watching movies unwatchable due to the noise.

The second I noticed was sluggish memory.

The Imac was also getting overheated very quickly.

Then about a month ago, the computer had a kernel. I switched it on and I got: 3 Beeps, pause, 3 beeps. This last about 30 mins and I gave up and switched it off.

I then switched it on again and got past the three beeps and got a Kernel panic on startup (white text highlighted in black).

After the computer had fully cooled down, I switched it on again and managed to get it to work. I backed everything up, despite the computer suffering numerous kernels.

My iMac was still under warranty with Dixons who sent KnowHow to pick it up and fix it.

They said they'd fixed all the problems.

I still had problems with the computer overheating and the memory seemed to be sluggish (though be it not as bad as before) but it was peforming a lot better.

Today, I had another kernel panic and recieved the 3 Beeps, pause, 3 beeps, pause etc message on startup. Again, I left it to cool down and it's now running reasonably quick. My iMac's warranty lapsed a few days ago (I am going to press that KnowHow haven't fixed an outstanding problem and try and get them to look at it)

Any ideas to what the problem could be?

Many thanks,

iMac

What model iMac, processor, year, and how much RAM is installed?

The beeps usually indicate a RAM issue (and RAM can go bad) - that you can easily fix yourself; simply buy modules from a trusted RAM vendor (OWC = macsales.com in US and/or Crucial elsewhere) - it is easy to install and it is also rather inexpensive these days.

Unfortunately, I do not know if the overheating could have anything to do with the RAM - hopefully someone will chime in with that. Who are these 'knowhow' people - are they Apple authorized service providers? Of course, if they've had the thing and claimed it was fixed, take it back. Personally, I would not trust anyone but an Apple authorized provider and I would certainly see if an install of good RAM might fix the issue.

The computer is working fine without the Crucial RAM but it was working fine with it (a little sluggish) this morning before it went into meltdown this evening.

For some reason, I've come to associate the issue related to it becoming overheated. The computer can get overheated very quickly. If the computer

It's unfortunatley not under Apple warranty but if replacing the Crucial memory doesn't improve things when my wage comes through I'll take it to the nearest Mac store and get them to look into it.

I do a lot of 3D rendering and there's been occasions where the render will take 5+ hours, I'll switch the computer off and on and try the same render on the same settings and the render will take 20 minutes.

Jul 25, 2013 4:47 PM in response to SpringHeeledJim

Ahh, rendering...... That is the single most heavy duty task for it. An i7 and higher processor would be better and the max RAM it can take...

According to these specs,

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i5-2.7-21-inch-alumin um-mid-2011-thunderbolt-specs.html

yours can take 16 GB officially, but has been tested with 32. So, I'd go at least to 16 GB.

I'd also, if possible, give it a rest in between and don't use it for anything but the rendering while that is going on. Also, make sure you have plenty of hard drive space free/available.

If you do decide to take it to an Apple store, make an appointment at the Genius Bar; the advice/diagnosis is free. You'd probably have to pay for a repair.

Hi,

I finally thought things were OK. I replaced my RAM a couple of weeks a go and since then there were no problems until last night when I had two kernels in the space of ten mins whilst watching a DVD (which was very frustrating as it was near the end!).

I have today received another kernel,

Sorry to reopen this thread but despite it not crashing for a fortnight after uninstalling Sophus, Soundflower and Littlesnitch. Since then I'm having numerous Kernels again.
