Brand new IMac screen has streaks that wont clean off

My brand new IMac's screen won't come clean. It looks as if their is a layer of cheep plastic over the glass. I have felt around the edges and can't find anything to peel off, so I'm wondering if I should take it back. Not sure what to do. Anyone else have this issue?

As a new iMac owner myself, I found per Apple's instructions water did not remove the smudges. In fact, water made more! Since I wear glasses, I tried the eye glass cleaner they use at the ophthalmologist office. Worked like a charm. The name of the product I use is called Ultra Clarity which comes w/its own micro cloth.

I spray the cloth (never spray directly on the screen) to wipe away the smudges. I use the micro cloth that came w/my iMac to wipe off.

I have not had any smudges since the first week I've had my 4 month old iMac. I am not a screen toucher. My iMac also came w/a hood which I place on it every evening and/or when not in use for a few days/weeks.

New iMac's come with a film wrap that covers the entire glass display and which extend to the back of the aluminum enclosure. It's usually pulled so nice and tight at the factory that it may look like it belongs. Did you remove that plastic film when you purchased the system? Look at the back of the system and see if you can find the edge of the film. It should be fairly noticeable. The film also covers the intake vents on the bottom of the iMac so it's important to make sure you remove the plastic film if it's present.

If the plastic film has already been removed then you may have some residue left behind from cleaning. If you have cleaned the display what kind of cleaning cloth did you use? The iMac cleaning instructions state that you should only use water to dampen a soft, lint free cloth.

iMac

When cleaning the outside of your iMac, first shut down your iMac and unplug the power cord along with other connected devices. Then use a damp, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the computer’s exterior. Avoid getting moisture in any openings. Do not spray liquid directly on the computer. Do not use aerosol sprays, solvents, or abrasives that might damage the finish.

To clean the display on your iMac, first shut down your iMac and unplug the power cord along with other connected devices. Next, dampen the cloth that came with your iMac—or another clean, soft, lint-free cloth—with water only, and then wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly on the screen.

Same issue.

Having enjoyed this thunderbox for six months I found those nagging dust smudges in both the bottom corners...

these are infinitesimal dust particles blown by the vents into the display through its untight body.

You won't remove the stains, even when taken apart.

A common problem in the previous generation: had it replaced then and going to have them do it again!
