How to require password ONLY on startup?

I recently bought a new MacBook Air. When I set the password, it makes me type in the password every time the computer starts, wakes up, or comes back from screensaver. On my last Mac, the password was only required when I stared (or restared) it.

Having to type in the password after sleeping and scrrensaver is forcing me to type it in 5-10 times a day - what a pain.

Is there a way to set it so the password is only needed on a start (or restart)?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), MacBook Air, iPhone5

Did you configure a password for your user account? If so, then a password requirement on startup means you must disable Automatic Login which is found by clicking on the Login Options button in Users & Groups preferences and removing the automatic login feature. This will cause a login password prompt on startup.
