Macbook air hooked up to tv through mini displayport to hdmi--possible to view one desktop on tv and work off another on the laptop simultaneously?

I I have my macbook air hooked up to my tv with a mini displayport to hdmi cable. Is it possible to play a movie on one desktop (and have that show up on the tv) while working off another desktop without that being viewed on the tv screen? The tv displays whatever the current desktop is that I am toggling between, so I don't know if its possible to view on desktop on the tv and another on my laptop screen. Please excuse my jarbled question--any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the Support Communities!

I believe you are asking about Extended Desktop mode.

In this mode, you can drag the window you want to the other display.

Thanks for responding! I don't have multiple displays. I just want to use my computer to say stream a video online, and have that show up on my tv, while being able to say answer an email (without that showing up on my tv). Hope I've been able to clarify myself a little 🙂 Again, thanks for the response!
