Ipod and itunes help please??!?

Can someone please help me. My 4th gen ipod touch crashed and when I try to restart it keeps getting this same screen which is telling me to connect to iTunes on my laptop, which I did but now iTunes is telling me that I cant use my ipod until I restore it. Does this mean i'll lose everything on there. I've never plugged my ipod into my laptop before and it wont let me sync now so nothing is backed up. I really cant lose everything on there! Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thanks

The contents of your iPod are now erased. Nothing you can do about that

Connect the iOS device to your computer and restore via iTunes. Place the iOS device in Recovery Modeif necessary to allow the restore.

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

For how to restore:

iTunes: Restoring iOS software

To restore from backup see:

iOS: How to back up

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

You can redownload iTunes purchases by:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
