iTunes wont connect to brand new iPod touch

Its a brand new 5th gen, 2 days old.

I have downloaded the latest version of itunes, and 64 bit as thats what my computer requires.
When when I plug in my iPod I get this message:

"This iPod cannont be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes"

This confuses me as it IS the 64 bit version i have installed!!!!!
I have uninstalled and installed the 64 bit version 4 times nows. What do I do?!

iPod touch, iOS 6.1.3
