windows 7 airport utility does not recognize my airport extreme

My iphone connects to my airport extreme and the airport utility sees it. So does my ipad and my friends laptop.

When I use wifi or wired connection (to lan port) from Windows 7 laptop to my airport extreme. The airport utility does not "see the extreme.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled the following:

- bonjour

- airport utility

- itunes.

I've wasted 3 hours on this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.....

Only 3 hours.. oh you have at least 3days of fun before you start getting any sense. (if ever).

What version extreme are you talking about? Actual model A1xxx from the base is a big help.

Step 1.. Ping.. Ping is your most important tool to find things on a network.

Open a command window and type ping 10.0.1.1 (or whatever is the current IP of the extreme).

Until you get response.. you are not connected.

Please do this with ethernet before starting down the black hole which is wireless.

Please turn off all firewalls if you don't get response. Remember laptops sold with Norton or McAfee can have multiple firewalls.

Ensure the local ethernet connectivity led is on.. as well as the extreme.

If you do not get an IP give one statically.. eg 10.0.1.100

Make sure the win7 is not in homegroup.

Make sure win7 is set to home.. not work or public for location of the network.

Step 2. .. This assumes you now have ping response.

In whatever airport utility you like, reset the extreme to use all SMB names. NOT apple names.. SMB names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. The AE itself and the wireless names must conform to the standard.

If you set static IP remember to go back to automatic so you get IP from the AE including gateway and dns values.

Tell us how you go.

UPDATE

* I located the IP address and admin password of the airport extreme and was able to log into to the (File / configure other) airport extreme.

I believe it's a W7 bonjour issue.

As you can see in my attachments, Bonjour is installed however msconfig running services show it as stopped. I can't get it to start.

** How can I force bonjour to start? **

Here are my replies to your recommended steps:

- I forgot to check this

- Yes, I can ping it.

Please turn off all firewalls.

- Yes, firewall is off

Make sure the win7 is not in homegroup.

- done.

I can't get it to start.

Make sure bonjour is ticked in startup.

If you cannot get it to start.. reboot the computer in safe mode and remove the bonjour software again.. reboot the computer.. reload bonjour again.

Bonjour is not 100% essential to getting access but it helps.

Change the airport name in the tab Base Station.

Change the wireless names in the tab wireless.

It is very straight forward. This is Mac version of the utility but is otherwise identical.

Wireless name under wireless.

Name under Base Station in my case it shows TIme Capsule because that is the product connected.

Now one thing I do notice from the screen shot is the unusual IP of the AE..

10.20.31.116

If you use an IP like this the TC should be in bridge mode.. not router.

LaPastenague - Thanks for the update.

Question for you:

1. You instructed me to use SMB names by "Change the airport name in the tab Base Station.Change the wireless names in the tab wireless."

- I'm confused. You want me to change these names to "changeme.local" or something along the lines of "smb://10.0.1.1" ? Please specify and provide an example.

Notes:

1. I haven't tried safe mode yet to start bonjour. Will try it tomorrow.

2. The airport extreme is in bridge mode.

3. I replicated this issue on 2 other airport extreme routers. One is brand new and the other is 2 years old.

Just look at the screen shots I have already posted.. my names are SMB compatible..

The wireless name is tcgen3 .. click on the screenshot under the text.

Wireless name under wireless.

The box is there.. wireless network name

Click on the next one down..

Where it says Time Capsule Name.. you can see .. The TC name is Tardis4

Yours will say Base Station Name or something similar.

Change HST Airport Extreme to something short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

HSTAEBS would be fine. for example.

Just go into the utility.. and change the names from apple default ones.. to any SMB name you like.

But it should make sense to you.. not changeme

And don't add .local that is added automatically.

You can use IP address of the AE when you are trying to access it in windows. IP or name comes down to the same thing.. but it is difficult when the name is not SMB compliant.
