Q: Easiest way to get from OSX 10.5.8 to latest OS?

If I'm still running OSX 10.5.8, do I have to upgrade one OSX at a time to get to the latest version?  I went to purchase Mountain Lion but it said system had to be 10.6.8 or later to upgrade.  I'm a few felines behind the times.

 

Do I have to purchase Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, THEN Mountain Lion?

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), Mac OS X (10.5.8)
