Is there a less "abrupt" method for exiting terminal mode on the MBA than a hard shut-down?

Hi, I'm probably missing something obvious here, but...after booting up my mid-June '13 MBA in terminal mode (to transfer files using a thunderbolt cable), my pressing the power button for 1 second does not get me to a shut-down screen. The only way I have found to exit terminal mode (and return to computing or close down) has been to do a hard close, i.e. pressing the power button for 5 seconds. Not "hard" to do, but I'm guessing there's a better way. Anyone? Thanks.
