iPhone 5 legitimate?

How can I tell if an iPhone 5 is a legitimate sale? I want to buy one from eBay from someone who has excellent feedback of over 14,000 items but none of these items are iPhones - they are all clothes. I need one that is completely unlocked because I do a lot of travelling and will be moving to the States in a few months.

I asked the usual questions and was told:

"All phones are 100% original from Apple , Brand New , factory unlocked , in sealed boxes , with all standard accessories included . Each phone have 1(one) year international Apple Care warranty . The warranty is valid once you activate the phone.

Here is our offert:

1 apple iphone 5 64 gb unloked- FOR UK- £350.00

1 apple iphone 5 64 gb unloked- FOR USA- 500.00$

The prices are made by our supplyers from apple..It depends on prices from your country"

So, it there a way I can be sure I am not getting ripped off? I know.....if it seems too good to be true - it is.....but. Because they have more than one, they are not giving me the serial number. They do accept returns but have a 10% handling fee.

Please help.

I would be very skeptical. One clue is that Apple does NOT offer an international warranty on iPhones.

I do not know why my input was deleted but, to answer your question. You can not do anything since you do not have proof. And the eBay guys are a little thick, they have to use every logged info in order to hear your complain. So my suggestion is you can give them a call on their free phone number and give them the username and inform them that you think that you think the listing is suspicious.

But if you bought stuff from the seller you can open case both on eBay and Paypal, you can also request contact information too (i really do not know what you can do with it though).

That is the one thing that really annoys me about eBay. Very, very often I see someone who is being very clever by tricking people into buying something that they think is one thing but if you 'read the small print' you will find a tiny bit notifying you that it is not as advertised in the heading or details. I always check and recheck x10 to make sure I will not get stung. Having said that, this mobile looks so good. If it really is sealed and apple certified, what problems can you see me having?

Do not even start me about eBay. 😐 I can not stand anything...

- Rubbish communications

- Dense CS employees

- Long waiting to speak (in some cases 40+mins)

- higher fees on digital items

- Not to forget they are both eBay and Paypal and rob you twice in broad day light

I mean it really is up to you, i do not know if you read the post that i wrote to you earier but it is a very tricky situation,

- check every detail

- Clarify with the seller to every question

- Make sure to have those as proof both on your ebay messaging service and your email (for the thick ebay guys)

- Also as soon as you pay make sure to request the seller's contact details, again that is another cautious thing to do.

Those are the smart measurements that you can do really, to my knowledge nothing more can be done.

I have decided that I am going to buy a 4S from a local store. They say "It has only been used for 2 weeks" for whatever that is worth. The only good thing is that at least I know them and they can make repairs. It was either being able to face someone and also get help using an unknown iPhone or dealing with someone I know nothing about on eBay other than what I read. I cannot afford to buy from Apple so I am trying to get the best price without being stung.

There are so many things to know about buying iPhones. After researching for 2+ weeks, I still missed reading the 'international' warranty!!!

Ps having said all of this, I will still watch eBay until I can get to the store on Monday 😀

Usually they do not tell you the original usage of most phones, they tend to reduce, months so i hardly believe that but since you will physically check it, i guess you can decide better. Make sure they do not change any components since i heard that so many times.

I mean if you are not planning to buy it from the official Apple store why not still pay extra £20 - £40 and get a 32gb from eBay from high rated reliable sellers. I am sure you can find a boxed one for less than £400.

Jul 27, 2013 7:41 AM in response to D3BS

By 'changing components' do you mean like changing the screen too? Why would that harm the phone unless they really were novices? I have been looking at Manufacturer refurbished ones but always come up with no answer when I ask what paper work they have to prove that. I am aware of the serial number starting with 5K but do not get answers there either.

You would think that I could find one for under £400, but easier said. I cannot even find a 16GB for that amount from a seller without problems. There are seller refurbished ones but they usually charge you 10%+ handling fee if you return it for any reason - even if it is faulty or has more wear than you would expect. Also many Grade C. Many locked - even if you tell a private seller that they can have it unlocked and it would help their sale. They will not give you a serial number. It might be handset only with no accessories. Etc, etc, etc...

The 4S that I found at local store is £350 and is only 16GB. A new one from Apple is only £100 more, but I keep saying the word 'only' to my other 1/2 still wants me to buy a £30 mobile. We only use payasyougo so I can see his point, but....

Ummmm.....I had a slip of a finger when I was looking at eBay last night. I bought a 4S from a private sale.

I really was in shock for a good hour. I spent that hour searching everything I could find about the owner and compiled a couple of pages on him. Thanks D3BS for mentioning that one should get contact details - it took a bit of time but I got full name, address, email address and mobile number. I did speak to the person as well and thankfully I got someone who is very caring and seems honest. We shall see when the mobile arrives but I do trust what he says.

Thank you all for your help! I am sure I will be back needing your expertise again very soon.
