Why does't the music play externally through the dock speaker?

I have a dock extension/apple lightning to 30-pin adapter so I can plug in my iPhone 5 into the dock/speaker, but whenever I try to play music, the music doesn't come out externally from the speaker of the dock. The radio works, but not the music. It also charges the phone too.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4

Can you tell us specifically what brand/model your dock is?

It's my understanding that that adapter ( I have one) only supports charging the iphone. To play the audio, the new docks (not Apple) have a prong that inserts in the audio out jack (headset) of the iphone to get audio to the dock. This prong sticks up next to the lightning connector on the base. Older docks, and most ones made for the '5, don't have this prong. Your adapter limits you to charging only. The world is univerally cursing Apple for the move to the 'Lightning' connector.
