I'm unable to save a new document created in Pages ('09). I'm getting the error message, "The file untitled.pages-tef couldn't be opened". The support people at Apple suggested I research on my own before paying for support. They told me it's a setting that's not correct. Any suggestions??

No it is a problem with iCloud.
Menu > Apple > System Preferences > iCloud > Uncheck and re-check Documents & Data
You may have to restart Pages and/or your Mac.
