external drives?

Hello group,

I have been reading some posts about loading OSX Leopard onto an external drive. I have 2 external drives, a Seagate 500GB and a WD 1TB desktop, which I formerly used with my defunct PC.

I have 2 questions; why is this recommended or not recommended, and how would I accomplish the upload?

I have a Leopard install disc, and would like to do the upload if it is beneficial. I have 3 PB G4's and would like to consolidate my music and important docs on my highest capacity unit. I would also like to download my entire music library to an external drive, and be able to retreive my music for creating mixes and CDs.

Thank you in advance for any and all responses, David

To be able to use an external drive as a startup with Mac OS X 10.5 on a G4 you need to have a firewire drive connection as they will not boot from USB connection.

I have a G4 12" with a firewire external HDD used as a bootable clone backup.

OWC has an external adapter for bare SATA drives with both USB and Firewire connection.

Also there are USB/Firewire drives in cases or as a kit.
