Every OSX has been a paid upgrade. Lion and Mountain Lion have been very cheap compared to previous OSXs on DVD. Future updates to each original OSX (eg. 10.7 to 10.7.2 etc) are free. Lion was taken out of the App Store when Mountain Lion was released, for some reason we did not have explained to us. There are still many machines which are capable of running Lion yet not Mountain Lion.

But you can contact Apple Customer Support and still purchase 10.7 (or 10.7.4 as that is the latest version) and pay, I think $29.95 and they will send you a download code which will take you to the site to download it. Then keep a copy of that installer on a flash drive or external drive as it 'self-destructs' (don't ask us why!) after installing.

Cheers
