Q: macbook pro is over heating when sleeping

When I close my macbook pro lid for a few hours it heats up and every few minutes it makes the sound there is when you turn on your macbook when it is on silent ( I think it is the hard drive turning on), and the apple logo on the lid turns on. If I open the lid when this happens then the screen is grayed out and there is a bar at the bottom of the screen. I tried changing the stand by delay to 0 to turn it off using terminal but after i do this and check my settings they appear unchanged. I appreciate all the help I can get, thanks.

Thanks again OGELTHORPE, but I am aware of the safe sleep, and it is not the issue that is affecting me. I don't mind my computer entering safe sleep (although it does have wireless activity and should not enter safe sleep), but my problem is that my computer wakes up from safe sleep every few minutes even if I am not around the computer or touching it, which i think is the cause of the overheating. I am also aware that when I move the computer it senses the movement and wakes up from safe sleep but there is no movement near my computer.

Also, today I noticed that when I am running on battery the problem doesn't accur so the problem must be safe sleep related. thanks again.

Based on what you are saying, I do not think your MBP is going into Safe Sleep mode as I understand it:

    "safe sleep
During safe sleep, the current state of the computer is saved on the hard drive, including open applications and open documents. This prevents your information from being lost if the computer is completely shut down during sleep, which could occur if the battery runs down or is replaced."

Have you tried to enter Sleep Mode via >Sleep from the drop down menu?

See if that makes any difference.

I entered sleep mode from the drop down menu and then closed the lid as you advised but the problem still happens. (if i enter sleep and keep the lid open the problem doesent happen).

I think most MBPs have a magnetic switch that senses when the lid is closed and activates sleep mode. In the pre-Unibody days, there were reports of a slightly deformed display assembly not completely engaging the sleep switch. Temps would go up.

It happened to me. I put the MBP, a pre-Unibody Late 2007 to sleep and stuck it in my carry bag. About an hour later I retrieved the computer from the bag and it was almost too hot to touch. My display had a slightly different gap on one side compared to the other.

See if the gap between the display and the main computer body is uneven. If so, I'd consult with an Apple professional to see if this is affecting sleep mode and how it can be repaired.

I did not seek help for mine. Rather, I made sure to shut it down before bagging it after that wake-up call.

Hey Allan, I checked and when i close my macbook pros lid the seal is perfectly even. I think you misunderstood my problem, when I clse the lid the computer does go to sleep, but after about half an hour it starts heating up, making the noise and lighting the apple logo on the back.

No, I understood. That is almost exaclty what I experienced. My MBP was clearly sleeping when I put it in the bag but somehow managed to override the sleep switch and was hot later.

It could the that your sleep switch was improperly installed and cannot maintain contact effectively. I'd get Apple to check it.

First of all, my MBP worked perfectly fine for about a year untill the problem started to happen. Second, I live in israel so getting apple to check it is not an option as I dont have any apple retail stores in israel. I was Hoping it was a software issue and not a Hardware issue but i was probably wrong. thanks.
