Can't shut off ipod to attempt to recover after it has been disabled

My son forgot his password to his iPod Touch. I attempt to connect to itunes to restore. He has never had it connected to a computer. It gives instructions to shut it off first to proceed but I can not get the device to shut off. Suggestions, help?
