Time Machine is unable to complete backups

All of a sudden Time Machine is unable to complete backups to my Iomega external disk. I am getting the message "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder." It was working fine up to now.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
