what does it mean to lock a document?

ok, so i was fiddling around on Pages last night and i discovered that i can "lock" a document if i go get its info. what does that mean exactly? because i went to save the document i locked, but then it said that i wasn't able to and i'd have to duplicate it. can thanks!
