My outboard hard drive will not mount. It is a LaCie

My backup drive is a LaCie and it has worked for years but now it will not mount. I have checked connections, powered off and on and rebooted my Macbook Pro. No help so far!

Check to see if it shows up in Disk Utility. If it shows up with a string looking something like /dev/diski02s2 (that's an example) then the system is seeing the drive but not as a Mac volume. It's usually an indexing problem. Otherwise I'd check out the downloads section at:

http://scsc-online.com

and download the hard drive troubleshootiing book they have. It's gross overkill for what you've got but I'm sure the problem is probably in their, and it's a PDF tthat''s free anyway.

There are a lot of things you can do, like try it on another port, confirm all the connections are good, sway cables in case one's gone bad....just common sense stuff.

As a side note, if the external drive housing has feiled it's quite possible the drive inside it may be 100% intact.

Lacie doesnt MAKE HD, the drives inside LaCie are all SEAGATE 😉 Toshiba HD are made by Hitachi.

VERY LIKELY YOUR HD IS FINE! Dont throw it away, its likely your SATA connector, take the LACIE apart and remove the HD from its connector SATA , use the HD in a HD dock.... most SATA connectors are VERY cheaply made. Seen this problem a 1000 times.

Yes, all HD go bad, Ive got nearly a 100 myself. Hitachi are best made, followed close by Seagate,...dead last is WD

I had the same problem with a LaCie firewire hard drive.

My drive had started, it made a noise as usual, but no icon on my desktop.

It did not show in Disk Utilities.

😟

I then followed the instructions from the FAQ list on the LaCie site:

http://www.lacie.com/nl/support/faq/faq.htm?faqid=10024

You need to follow all steps carefully.

IT WORKED FOR ME.

🙂

Apparently what you do here is what they call a Bus reset.

Good luck to all of you with this problem, I hope it works for you as well.
