White vs. Black MacBook: Price?

I had a friend who is considering switching ask be why the Black MacBooks were more expensive than their white counterparts. I naturally assumed he just missed something in the specs that would justify its extra cost. However, after reading through the tech specs, all I could find is that the Black MacBook has 80Gb of hard disk space standard compared to the White MacBook's 60.

I figure that I am missing something obvious, but I would greatly appreciate someone pointing out to me why the Black MacBooks cost more.

Thanks, Matthew.

Actually I recall a report, which made sense in which the line as a whole cost a bit more for Apple. Just look at the specs, it's all rather pricey. So instead they placed a premium price on the black, which they assumed would be rather popular to help offset costs as a whole for the entire lineup. So yes, it's more because of the persumed demand for the black, but also it acts as a buffer to keep the price of all the units a bit lower.

Personally I prefer having a white one. Not only is the Black one more exensive, but it looks just the same as every other Laptop on the market (you will struggle to find a laptop without any black on it apart from an apple one). I just think that the white one is more, well, Apple.

Also, I would rather take the risk of having the yellowing colour then the whole black surface flaking, like alot of people are saying.

However, at the end of the day it depends on which one you prefer. Apparently they also used some special material on the black one which is more expensive.
I just feel that a different colour and different materials is justified in an extra $150 (£128 here in england).

Hopefully the discolouration of the white ones is a limited problem. I have a white and black macbook in the home and I like both, but I want them to remain their respective colours. I do agree though, that the black seems a bit more professional looking, but both are extremely attractive and don't look like other mainstream laptops at all. Apple definately can design attractive machines.

Thankfully, I haven't seen any discolouration or flaking on either of my machines. Regardless, this wasn't supposed to be a popularity contest, so "why is black more"? -- read my original post for my thoughts.

The original question was why does the black cost more, not why you think white better. And for the record, Apple notebooks were black before they were white. So a black notebook is a throwback to the trueschool for me.

Second, the black surface that flaked has already been shown to be an isolated case. Most blackbook owners will tell you that the black macbooks surface seems to be much more durable than the glossy white. But we'll have to see over time which prevails.

I remember that my first Mac laptop - mono 165 - was a nice grey colour and that was in the first PowerBook 100 series so I suppose white and black hark back to this original halfway house <g>!

Oh and the build quality of that 165 was amazing, but on the downside it had I think a 33MHz processor and maybe a 40MB drive but I came nowhere near filling that!
