impossible to install gd (lib) on mac OS X 10.8.4 any help

I'm on

- Mac OS X 10.8.4

- Processor 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 --- it's probably a 64 bits

Downloading and installing libjpeg and libpng is OK
but not Installing GD

I download libgd-2.1.0-rc2.tar.gz manually
I copy it to srctemp directory
I unzip it there
I switch to srctemp/libgd-2.1.0-rc2/src and try ./configure
Here I have the error "-bash: ./configure: No such file or directory"
Whene I switch to srctemp/libgd-2.1.0-rc2 I can execute ./configure
But I can't make and sudo make install

Any help please

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), Processor 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7

Well I last managed it on Tiger (which is why I keep a machine going running that), but had given up on practically everything on Snow Leopard. However since following etresoft's instructions for getting Perl mysql drivers on Mountain Lion, and then getting Apache to run, followed by Tomcat, I was hoping the great man would have no trouble with GD.

I really hate it when anybody asks you "Why do you want to do that?" Reminds me of my first contact with IT support. The implication is I don't know what I'm doing and I shouldn't be doing it.

Well I have legacy Java Servlet-based web apps dating from before headless Java (1.41 or whatever) and rather than rewrite the Perl GD stuff I'd prefer to be able to keep running it. If it ran on Tiger (which it did) why not on now? Also, I may have to tangle with some advanced bioinformatics visualization software that incredibly (I hate Perl as much as any other sane programmer) uses Perl graphics. So I thought I'd see if it were possible. Or does Apple only do consumer fluff these days?

And I hate it when anybody quotes me out of context. It wasn't a rhetorical question, as you can see from the next sentence, "Whatever you are trying to build probably exists somewhere as a standalone installer". I sincerely wanted to know what the original poster was building. I am not about to go into details of building GD for someone who probably doesn't care and probably isn't every going to respond anyway.

In many cases, that is a valid implication. People tend to find some blog page written for a Linux audience in 2008 and try it 4 years later with a version of Xcode that is two years out of date. They get stuck on step 13 out of 19 and come here to ask how to get step 13 working, neglecting all of those other details.

Call me crazy, but I like Perl. While this may come as a shock, Apple is highly focused on the consumer market. You can still write Java Servlet-based web apps if you want, but don't expect to walk up to the Genius bar or call support and find anyone who knows what you are talking about.

If you want help, the best strategry is to start your own question instead of resurrecting one that was abandonned by its author five months ago. Explain what you would like to accomplish, at a high level. Explain what you have tried, at a low level. If you encountered any difficulties, feel free to mention what they were.

Sincere apologies etresoft. I really was extremely greatful to you for finally helping me to get the Perl/Mysql drivers to run on ML and had tried to find a way to say thank you to the postings, but the discussion seemed to be closed. Instead I offend you, and you probably don't really believe my affirmation of gratitude.

As for your other comments. Yes, I know many people like Perl, and obviously you use it otherwise you wouldn't have posted. I can live with a world of different programming languages. Obviously I do some Perl myself as I had a need for MySQL Perl drivers. And yes, I have been to the Genius bar to sound out the tech savy there and I know the score.

I guess I was astounded and annoyed to find that the GBrowse project, which does visualization for advanced genomic analysis (including something called RNAseq), was using Perl web graphics, as I have a contract job that involves visualizing RNAseq. This, as I feared, uses GD, which I hope explains my attitude. There is a download I haven't tried yet, but my experience with GD is such that I was just hoping that as you had sussed the other things out you might have sorted this.

I am happy with Java Servlets and would prefer to use them to generate my own graphics. (I have control over my own server.) Tomcat runs fine, so I don't need help from the Genius bar - just the Java community. Generating gifs or pngs for this sort of work is unbelievably stupid anyway. What is needed by scientists is SVG so they can repurpose and publish the web output. There are some Java hooks into that, so that's the direction I would prefer to go in if and when I have got the canned Perl solution up and running.

You sure you can't...

No offence taken.

I haven't tried to build GD in some time. Things change quickly. I have seen reports that it can be installed with Homebrew. However, GD seems to have made numerous improvements since then. It even appears to have an actual website now.
