Dec 12, 2014 7:26 PM in response to KiltedTimby gtach2930,Hopefully, other people with error 4014 have better experience with "Genius" bar. I was just there this evening with my 2-year old IPad that went blank after the last ios update from 7 to 8.0. When I tried to reset and reinstall ios through ITune, it said the ipad is in recovery mode and could not be recovered, error 4014. After waiting almost an hour to see one of them, one of the "Genius" there at Altamonte Mall, Florida plugged into ITune in a Mac, and got the same result. I asked him exactly what error 4014 means. He said point-blank that he didn't know, and either made no attempt to find out or knew exactly what kind of mess this 4014 is and didn't want to get into it for me. The "Genius" also suggested that I could exchange for a new ipad for $299, which is what I have to pay right on top of the $400-500 that I already paid for the defective one that I have now. So, KiltedTim, visiting a "Genius" bar is not cure-all.
BTW, I had googled the error code a few days ago. This error code 4014 with iphones and ipads is widespread; obviously, it affected many people who own Apple products. My question to the Apple upper management is why they treat the flaw in their products as anomaly, and why no one at Apple is working on workaround or solution to error 4014. I am a PC guy, but lately start to try more and more Apple products. With this disappointment with Apple IPad, I will be hanging on to my PC & Microsoft products quite a while longer. Next year, I was planning on purchasing a Mac Book Air next year. I am now thinking Surface Pro 3!

Jul 1, 2015 5:30 PM in response to David2108by Colebebop,For what it's worth to people who still have an iPhone 4 like myself...
This is what I did to resolve the error 4013 / 4014 problem after endless attempts.
Open iTunes, unlock the app, change the permissions, dump it.
Reinstall iTunes, hold in the home button on the phone and plug it in. When it shows in iTunes, eject it.
Unplug phone from USB cord on the phone side.
Hold in home button and plug it in again. Hit the restore button.
Doesn't work... Error 4013 this time. Last time it was 4014.
So, I do the above all over again. For the 20th time. However, this time, my intuition tells me that instead of disconnecting my hub and everything else plugged into the USB slots as Apple and other forums advise you to do in this predicament, I keep my hub plugged in and plug the USB cord for my phone into the hub.
So I do just what Apple and other advice forums advise you NOT to do with the USB set up.
And... It worked... The restore process got past the hiccup / error stage and my iPhone is working again.
However, at the very end, a message window came up in iTunes and says the restore failed and I need to take my phone to Apple. Yet, I look at the screen of the phone and it's working.
The phone is backing up from the cloud as I write...
Like I said, for what it's worth... I hope it works for anyone else who has this problem.
