Question

broken screen how to get pictures

My wife's screen just went blank. She has her iphone password protected. I just restored my iMac and of course that makes iTunes read like a new computer and my wife's phone is not recognized. It's asking for her password. Apple is wanting to restore the phone first. I need the pictures and videos off of the phone.

Is there a way to get these pictures off of the phone and bypass the lock? I've tried iphoto, image capture, iexplorer, preview and eveything else I can think of. Are they just lost?

Any help would be appreciated.

Easier said than done. I have apple care. I can get a new screen for free. I'm trying to see if there is way through my mac to get the pictures before they wipe the phone as soon as they get it.

you can easily buy a screen on amazon and replace it yourself.

To purchase a screen and replace it yourself would void your AppleCare and and any other warranty you may have.....

Try the steps in this article to see if they help... Hopefully you will be able to import the photos & videos to your Mac without having to sync...

you can always keep the old broken screen... if you want warranty, replace the old borken screen back and then return it. that won't void anything.

Not planning on doing anything outside of applecare. Just didn't know if there was a program out there that had figured out a way to do this without my wife losing all her videos of our 16 month old. If there lost then thats fine just was stretching out to the community to see.

There is no 'official' way that I know of, but there may be third-party resources. Did you happen to have PhotoStream enabled on the device? That would help with pictures, but not videos I think.

Have you tried restarting and/or resetting?

Yep, I have one more option I'm going to try. I have an old time maching backup with the last itunes in it that I used to backup my wife's phone. I'm restoring it now and if it will recognize the iphone then I can at least back it up and then restore it to another phone and then get the pics and videos. Don't know if it will work but its worth the try.

Yes, I've tried everything as far as the device is. But you can't see anything on the black screen. She's tried hitting the buttons from memory and everything but to no avail.

if you have a windows computer or a friend with a windows computer, you can put the device into recovery mode, plug it into the pc, sometimes this will foold the pc into thinking its a camera or usb storage device allowing you to make a selection "open folder to view files" and that MAY allow you to copy the pictures from the phone to that computer, this is not 100% foolproof but i have used this method before and it has worked

That's kind of a good point. I wonder if AutoPlay would still be able to launch on a Windows PC, even with a passcode lock. I don't think it will, but it's worth a shot. Never tried it myself before.

Even with passcode lock, it should work, since it should be put into recovery mode first ^^

I'm trying through parallels. Will that work? I've put it into Recovery mode but it always opens itunes on the parallels side. Does it need to not have itunes for this to work? I'm currently uninstalling itunes on the parallels side to see.
