samsung 840 pro controller issue, May firmware fixes most issues

Just a heads-up, I've been using a Samsung 840 pro ssd (256GB) in my mid 2012 macbook pro 15" since Feb. 2013. I started getting a spinning beachball upon wake from sleep. Looking through the console log I did not see anything disk related, it seemed like another application was causing the issue, so I uninstalled the software. Things seemed to be better, then today, beachball of death, hard power down, then no more boot drive. I tried Recovery, when I went into Disk Utilities the drive showed 1.01GB capacity. I contacted Samsung support who informed me this is a known issue. There is a firmware update that fixes most of the issues, but they say it doesn't fix all of them. They are still working on the remaining issues.

Needless to say, I sent my drive in for a replacement...

Update: I shipped the drive out Monday afternoon and received the replacement Wednesday morning. Loaded the drive into the laptop, but internet recovery was not working. The load progress bar barely started then the world rotation would stop (if you're familiar with Recovery, you'll know what I'm talking about). I had created Mountain Lion Recovery media on USB when I first received my computer, but that did not work either. I finally hooked up my original drive that was in a Firewire enclosue, and internet recovery was off and running.

Took about 6.5 hours to recover from a time machine backup, but laptop boots faster than it used to...

I did take a look at the firmware version before starting anything and it was the latest that SAMSUNG has available.

Don't forget to do your backups... :O)
