Why am I required to provide a Title when filling in my credit card information?

The only options they have available are Dr., Mr., Mrs., and Ms. Why does Apple need to know what is in my pants? And why, if I'm female, does Apple want me to imply my marital status, but not if I'm a male? And why are Doctors exempt from this antiquated requirement?
