Characters in character viewer gone / empty / not showing

Recently, my special characters viewer will open with absolutely no characters. Everything else is there -- the windows and all the options...but the characters themselves are gone! The list on the left with the different KINDS of characters are fine.

I've tried re-installing or checking system fonts, but I believe I have all system fonts installed and can't figure out what I'm missing.

Might be corrupted preferences ...

Open the Finder.

From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.CharacterPaletteIM.plist

Click Go then move the com.apple.CharacterPaletteIM.plist file to the Trash.

Restart your Mac.

installing third party font managers can cause the issues you are describing.

When I do the Go to Folder command sequence you described, this is what it says: "The folder “com.apple.CharacterPaletteIM.plist” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents." Which is strange because I have admin rights.

When I search for files on "This Mac" containing CharacterPalette, it yields 0 files.

OK I figured it out. For some reason, it would not let me use the entire address you originally gave me for the Go to Folder command. I had to leave out the filename. Also, for some reason, Finder does not show all of the .plists when I search for them.

I had to do this:

Open the Finder.

From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

~/Library/Preferences/

Click Go then move the com.apple.CharacterPaletteIM.plist file to the Trash.

Restart your Mac.

I also found that my third-party font manager (FontViewer) had all my dingbats disabled. Enabling them alone did not solve the problem, but may have helped in the end? (Monotype Sorts, Wingdings, Wingdings 2, Wingdings 3, and Webdings.)
