Need help installing Canon network printer on Mountain Lion

I am trying to install a Canon MF4270 network printer with my Macbook Air running Mountain Lion.

I added the printer using its IP, and selected the MF4200 driver from the list that came installed with the OS. The printer worked, but it would not allow me to print double-sided (the option was greyed out). Some research showed that other people with similar problems simply updated the printer driver.

I checked the driver version and it said 2.0. I went to the Canon website and downloaded the newest version of the driver, which said 2.43.

I re-added the printer with the new driver. Same problem.

So I deleted the driver and the list of associated files, given to me by Canon tech support (I verified then that the MF4200 driver was no longer on the list), then installed the new driver (restarting my computer at every step). I re-added the printer.

Now, it doesn't work at all. When I try to print, I get the following message: "Canon UFR II Printer Driver / Cannot communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again, then start Printer Utility to get the printer information."

I tried adding the printer using the Generic PostScript Printer driver, and when I print, it says that it is printing and I get no errors, but nothing prints.

Now, I can't print at all, and no one at Canon or Apple has been able to solve the problem.

Please help.

First, delete the print queue in the Print & Scan preference pane, if you haven't already done so.

Back up all data.

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:

/Library/Caches/Canon/CUPSCAPT/CCPD/ccpd.conf

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal

from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Trash. You may be prompted for your login password.

Recreate the print queue.

Linc, I tried to do that, but when I click Reveal, I get "The operation can’t be completed because the item can’t be found."

PAHU, I used LPD because it can't find the printer if I try one of the other protocols. With LPD, it seems to find the printer on my network, but I get the errors when I try to print something.

One other update: the printer works if I plug it in directly (but still won't let me select double-sided), so it seems to be a problem with gettng it back on my network. Before I started messing with all this, it worked fine when I added it an IP printer (but no double-sided).

Ok, did that, re-added the printer, and again same error. I try to print something and first it says "The printed output may be incorrect because the printer information has not been acquired. Start Printer Utility to get the printer information."

Then, I click OK, and it says "Canon UFR II Printer Driver / Cannot communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again, then start Printer Utility to get the printer information."

If I type the printer's IP into my address bar, it communicates with the printer and says ready to print.

You are right. Unfortunately, following Canon's instructions to delete all its printing software was a bad idea because there was no Apple software available to reinstall for my printer (the Canon drivers available for download from the Apple site don't include the full list that came with the OS). I ended up doing a Time Machine restore to a few days ago, before I tried fixing the printer issue in the first place, so now I can print again. I guess I will have to use my Windows computer to print double-sided.

The UFR2 driver does not use the Layout tab for two sided printing. You should find an additional menu called Finishing and this is where the 2 sided setting resides.

That said, the UFR2 v2.43 driver is set to 2 sided by default for many Canon printers. And there are models within the MF series that do not have a duplex unit. The models that do have a duplex unit have the letter D in their name, for example, MF4580dn - d is for duplex and n is for network.

Also, checking the instruction that Linc has provided above, this is for the CAPT driver not the UFR2 driver. So the folder path would be

/Library/Caches/Canon/UFR2/CCPD

Also, as you have found, Canon does not provide the UFR2 driver to Apple like they do for their inkjet printers. So you have to get the driver from Canon.

Wow, PAHU, I cannot believe that after all that, my solution was right there! For my HP printer at work, two-sided printing is on the Layout tab, and for this printer, the option is there on the Layout tab, but it is grey and unselectable - searching through the forums, people said that it must be a driver issue and that's what started the driver issues. No one at Canon or Apple ever suggested checking the Finishing tab, which would have avoided this whole mess. Thank you so much!
